The state statistical observation (SSO) over investment of external economic activity has been undertaking since 1994.
The SSO data on investment of external economic activity are compiled on the basis of information from legal persons-residents and separate units of legal personsnonresidents in Ukraine (their brunches and permanent representative offices).
Since January 1, 2010, the observation results also include administrative information of the National Bank of Ukraine about market value of foreign direct investment (shares, property, etc.) of enterprises and institutions and since January 1, 2015, data on foreign direct investment of Ukraine's banks which include reinvested income (calculated by the NBU on basis of data on undistributed profits/losses according to participation share of direct investor in their capital): the Methodological provisions on organization of the state statistical observation over investment of external economic activity approved by SSSU decree No 284 (with changes) of October 3, 2014.
Commencing from Q1, 2020, the state statistics bodies carry out the SSO over investment of external economic activity in line with the Methodological provisions on organization of the state statistical observation over investment of external economic activity approved by SSSU decree No 117 of March 31, 2020.
Information, compiled on the basis, of this SSO is not released by the SSSU.
This is intermediate information and is given to the NBU for the following purposes:
- production of indicators on direct investment to/from Ukraine;
- balance of payments compilation;
- identification of the country's international investment position.
The single body responsible for foreign direct investment data dissemination is the National Bank of Ukraine.

is investment in the acquisition or manufacture of tangible and intangible assets by its own resources for its own use. They count towards enterprises-legal entities by the location area (legal address).

Capital investment index
is calculated under the Procedure approved by the order of the State Statistics Committee No. 494 dated December 25, 2009.

Direct investment
is a category of international investment activity that reflects the desire of an institutional unit - a resident of one country to exercise control or significant influence on the activities of a company that is a resident of another country. The investment is direct if the capital/property rights of the non-resident makes at least 10% of the value of the authorized capital of the resident company, (or) the non-resident has at least 10% of the votes in the management of the resident company. Direct investment includes investment received on the basis of concession agreements and joint investment agreements; credit resources provided/received in the framework of transactions between an enterprise of direct investment and a direct investor. Direct investment involves participation of the direct investor in the choice of investment objects and placement of capital.

Indirect investment
involves placement of the investor's capital mediated by other persons (financial intermediaries).

Investment in intangible assets
includes investment in the acquisition or creation of software, databases, rights to use natural resources, property, trademark rights for goods and services, industrial property rights, copyright and related rights using its own resources
6.
Investment in tangible assets
includes investment in land, existing buildings and structures, new buildings, structures, construction in progress, machinery, equipment and inventory, vehicles, long-term biological assets and other noncurrent tangible assets that were acquired or created for its own use, including thorough repairs, improvement, refinement, reconstruction, modernization.
